Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs cod or haddock fillets, cut into strips
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup cold beer
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 4 large potatoes, cut into thick chips
  • Malt vinegar and tartar sauce for serving

Instructions

    Heat oil to 350°F (175°C) in a deep fryer or large pot

    Fry potato chips until golden and crispy, set aside

    Mix flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper

    Whisk in cold beer until smooth (batter should be thick)

    Pat fish dry and season lightly with salt
